Dense reinforcement creates barriers that can trap air and leave voids if the concrete isn’t fully consolidated around the bars. The correct approach uses appropriate vibrating equipment to transmit energy through the concrete, so the paste flows into all spaces around and beneath each reinforcement member. Placing in lifts keeps the pour manageable and ensures the vibrator reaches the entire section, reducing the chance of unfilled pockets and cold joints. Importantly, avoid pounding or moving the reinforcement during placement; such actions can displace bars and cause segregation or voids.

Pouring without vibration and compacting by hand won’t adequately consolidate around dense reinforcement, leading to voids and honeycombing. Removing reinforcement or performing a single, location-wide pour without vibration also prevents proper consolidation and increases the risk of segregation.
